The Avengers Age of Ultron is like being bitch slapped with Awesome!

Here’s my not so epic long ass spoiler filled review Spoiilers in…

Excuse me while I prematurely geek out all over your face during my review.  Avengers 2 starts off with action from the get go “Hail hydra!”  With the good old band getting back together again.  You should know the star studded cast by now if you’re following me.  If not we can’t be friends, so let’s save the formalities. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow  and Hawkeye are back as The Avengers!

During the opening battle we see the Avengers have come along way since first film.  They fight as a unit under the command of Cap America, instead of a group of Super egos.  We’re quickly introduced to two newcomers the twins.  Piertro Maximoff “Quicksilver” (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who has super speed and  Wanda Maximoff “Scarlett Witch” (Elizabeth Olsen) with telekinesis and mind manipulator.

Now the comic origins of these two is they’re the mutant children of Magneto.  You know that guy stuck in the shitty X-Men movies with Fox.  Thanks to legal issues Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch can’t be referred to as Mutants by Marvel studios.  Instead director Josh Whedon picks up where Captain America: Winter  Soldier post-credit scene  left off.  The twins are products of  Hydras experiments lead by Baron Von Strucker.

Even though Lokis not in this film (sorry fan girls) his Scepter is a really big deal.  The team retrieves the scepter and throw a party at Avengers headquarters.  We see many Marvel fan favorites like War Machine and Falcon.  Hell even Stan Lee gets drunk on Asgardian Liquor in his highly anticipated cameo.

However Tony Starks has been secretly using the scepters power to create an A.I.  His intentions to bring world peace but instead spawns a monster.  Ultron voiced perfectly by (James Spader) is finally a Super-villain worthy of The Avengers.  No disrespect to Tom Hiddlestons “Loki” but he’s not on same level of villainary.  Although some of his lines were corny Spaders voice was creepy and fitting.

Ultrons origins is again a huge change from the comic storyline.  As his original creator is Hank Pym “Ant-man”.  Who’s yet to have been introduced to Marvel’s cinematic universe.  Maury: “In the case of Ultron, Tony Stark you are the father!”  I don’t mind the plot change as it has major implications on the team.

Ultron aligns himself with the wonder twins while building a massive army of robots and upgrading his cybornetic body.  The Avengers track him to Wakanda (home of Black Panther) where hes harvesting the rare resource “Vibranium”.  Thats the stuff Captain Americas shield is made of and nearly indescribable.  We find out why Ultron needs human help.  When Scarlet Witch uses her powers to mind manipulate most of the team.

Even turning Hulk on citizens in Wakanda.  Leading us to my favorite fight scene in the movie as Hulk and Iron man in his Hulkbuster suit duke it out.  This was some spectacular eye candy and alone worth the price of admission to Imax 3D.

The Avengers find themselves battered and at odds.  Mostly due to Tony Starks undermining them and creating this threat.  They regroup on a farm, Hawkeyes farm.  E-I-E-I-O.  Where we meet his illegitimate family he’s been hiding.  Thor takes off to go find himself in a pond.  Just an excuse to get Chris Hemsworth shirtless and wet.

Bruce Banner aka Hulk and Black Widow plan to into hiding.  Especially since the Hulk smashed half of Africa.  The films been playing off a whole love attraction between the two all film long.  Although this love interest came out of left field and felt forced.  If I was Brucie I’d definitely Hulk Smash Scarlett Johansson.

Nick Fury makes his appearance because its not a marvel movie until Samuel L. Jackson pops in.  Fury rallies the troops with his pep talk than disappears again.  I swear this was Jacksons easiest paycheck as he barely got screen time.

While the Avengers figure themselves out Ultron accidently shows his true plans to Scarlet Witch.  He wants to destroy humanity and usher in a new race of cyborgs.  The twins ditch Ultron and later on stand up against him with the avengers.  A fight over Ultrons new body takes place.

Bringing in a new character into the film “Vision” (Paul Bettany)  a super powered android.    Think a kindler gentler version of Ultron.  He wasn’t setup well and felt like a throw in to save Tony Starks image among his peers .  Vision was just one more hero to help take on the Ultrons army.

The final showdown takes place in a flying city (I said wtf too).  It provided some fun visuals as the Avengers stood side by side joined by the twins, War Machine and Vision.  Fighting Ultron after Ultron and saving bystanders.  Fury and the artist formerly known as Shield make a dramatic  appearance with the Hellicarrier (oh thats why the city flew).

During all the mayhem one of the newest heroes was surprisingly killed off.  Quicksilver took one for the team by shielding Hawkeye and a child from bullets.  The arrow shooting hero had the best moments with both twins and received a greater role this film.

Ultrons main vibranium superbody ultimately meets his demise after being blasted by Vision, Thor and Iron man simultaneously.  Than has his meatallic heart ripped out by a grieving Scarlet Witch.  The last of the Ultrons is destroyed after a showdown with his own creation  Vision.

The aftermath leaves the Avengers drastically changed.  Hulk goes into hiding from the world  including his love interest Black Widow.  Thor goes home to look into his visions setting up plot of Thor 3.  Iron man and Hawkeye decide its time to retire.  Captain America is found training a new team of Avengers.  Enter the B-squad War Machine, Falcon, Scarlet Witch and Vision.

Mid-credits bonus scene (don’t waste time sitting through entire credits after this) shows us Thanos and his quest to fill the infinity gauntlet.  Clearly Thanos (Josh Brolin) will be the main villain in Avengers 3.  I was really hoping to see Black Panther, Spider-Man or even Ant-man.

Age of Ultron was a better film than its first go. I really enjoyed  this movie but can’t act like it wasn’t without flaw.  The plot isn’t as intelligent as Captain America Winter Soldier and at times writing seemed lazy.  It did provide plenty of entertainment.  It’s fun, action packed and beautiful to look at.

I recommend you go see it as its a blockbuster worth the price.  Marvel didnt disappoint earning a 8.5 from me out of 10

Avengers: Disassembled

The Avengers are Marvel/Disney’s billion dollar machine, but can they keep it together?  Contracts are almost up and not everyone may be on board to continue Marvels magic.   Joss Whedon has confirmed the Marvel cinematic universe is planned out until 2028.  Who will stick around? What new pieces can they bring in to keep it going?

Disney paid 4 billion dollars for Marvel entertainment.  Lets see how that return has gone for them with world wide box office totals.

  • Iron man 1, 2, 3 = 2,424,547,847
  • Captain America 1, 2 = 1,454,304,935
  • Thor 1, 2 = 1,543,436,376
  • Avengers =  1,518,594,910

The big three after Avengers 3

Speaking of money lets start with the man that helped launch Marvels superhero universe Robert Downey Jr.    Forbes  listed him as the highest paid actor for the second year in a row thanks to his Iron Man role.  However when Downey’s  contract was up last year he only negotiated to sign on for Avengers 2 & 3.  He recently teased that he could return for a Iron Man 4 film.

Prediction: RDJ will ride this wave until his bank account resembles Tony Starks.

Chris Evans on the other hand has made it clear once the contract with Marvel is up he’ll be hanging up Captain Americas shield.  “I think when I’m done with this Marvel contract, I’ll take a little break from acting.”  Evans has only 3 films left to fulfill that contract, Avengers 2, 3  Captain America 3.

Prediction:  Marvel will look to the comics for inspiration.

The last member of the big three  Chris Hemsworth stands to win out big time financially.  Marvel cannot afford to lose two of its big three Avengers.   He can demand a God like contract similar to what Downey signed.  Hemsworth has not ruled out a return once his contract is up.

Prediction: Thor will be swinging his hammer for a few more films after Avengers 3.

Ant-Man-fitting-in-with-the-Hulk-storyline

The Hulk will still be smashing the box office past Avengers 3.  Mark Ruffalo signed a 6 picture deal with Marvel.  The only difference between his and the big three is that hes only fulfilled one of those movies.  Leaving room for three more films after Avengers 3.  Ruffalo has been advocating for a Hulk film and I am sure he will get it.  Most assumed Marvel was afraid to do another Hulk movie after the last two were bust.  However it was smart to leave this candy in their back pocket. Prediction: Ruffalo will get his solo shot.

Paul Rudd is the newbie movie hero with his upcoming Ant-Man now under production.  Rudd is not only getting his own solo film but I believe Marvel has him set up as the backup Avenger for any of the departed. I have some concerns about this film.  The original director Edgar Wright departed just before production as well as a couple of actors.  Marvel brought in a new team to help rewrite script, which is scary at this stage in the game.  Add in the fact Ant-man isn’t the most popular hero to begin with and well…

Prediction: Ant-man will flop in comparison to the big threes numbers.  However he will still replace Captain America in Avengers 4.

cumberbatchstrange

Dr Strange movie has been announced now the question is who will play him?  Those of us that are Sherlocked have been pushing for Benedict Cumberbatch.  The other fan favorite rumor is Marvel is after Jared Leto, who in my opinion is the best fit.  However I do not believe either of those two actors will commit to a long contract with Marvel.  A recent report from Deadline has Joaquin Phoenix as Marvels next leading hero.  No question whoever they choose must be a strong well known actor because they could need to further replenish the Avengers if RDJ or Hemsworth opts out.

Prediction: I believe Marvel will surprise us and sign Keanu Reeves

What Marvel should do

Listen I’m just some geek blogger sitting in his pajama pants with a empty cup of noodle soup to his right, so what do hell do I know?  Well I may not have the wits of Marvels execs but I do know comics and movies.  Heres a list of what I think can keep Marvel on its strong course post Avengers 3.

Nick-Fury-Hawkeye-Black-Widow-Loki

  1.   Develop the rest of the supporting characters.  Samuel L. Jacksons Nick Fury is on point but Hawkeye and Black Widow could use more screentime.  Scarlett Johanssen had her coming out party in Winter soldier.  They failed by not capitalizing on that by announcing a movie starring her.  A story centered around Black Widow, Nick Fury and Hawkeye would do wonders.  No one could use this more than Jeremy Renner who is the only one playing on the C-team of the Avengers.
  2. Less Loki is good.  I love Tom Hiddleston but enough already.  He was not a formidable adversary to the Avengers but still the beloved actor was chosen as its main villain.  You know he’ll be in Thor 3 but besides that we can use a break from the Trickster.
  3. Bring in another strong female character.  Maybe Scarlet Witch will fill that role come Avengers 2 but I want someone worthy of getting a solo film.  Captain Marvel is the one that comes to mind. captainmarvel
  4. More Winter Soldier and Falcon!  Afterall one of them will be replacing Cap if Evans is done.  Most likely Sebastian Stan who signed on for a 9 picture deal with Marvel.  So show us the bad ass Winter Soldier is and break him in as someone worthy to be the next Captain America.  Anthony Mackie’s Falcon needs to become more prominent moving foward.  He was the surprise of Captain America: The Winter soldier in my opinion and he could fit in well on The Avengers team.wpid-picsart_1396776307823.jpg
  5. Give us Black Panther.  I’ll be the first to admit I was pissed Marvel gave Ant-man a film before Black Panther.  He would be the perfect character to replace a Iron Man, Thor or Captain America on the team.  black-panther-movie-image

Marvel is dominating the big screen but with changes eventually coming and the pressure from DC’s Justice League on its way.  How long can they hold the throne?

Marvel showed footage from Avengers Age of Ultron

imageI dont have any footage of that action but heres a great description from i09.com

We saw a ton of Avengers: Age of Ultron footage, which starts light-hearted. We see the Avengers sitting around trying to untangle the “whosoever is worthy” thing, regarding who gets to hold Thor’s hammer. And they all think it’s a trick, or a circus sideshow.

“If I lift it, do I get to rule Asgard?” Tony asks. And Thor says yes. Tony says he will be fair but firm, and maybe work out the “wench clause.” Tony can’t lift it — even after he puts on an Iron Man glove and gets Rhodey to help him. Soon everybody is trying to lift it — including Bruce Banner, who gets kinda upset — and only Steve Rogers even comes close.

Black Widow doesn’t even want to try lifting it, because “That’s not a question I need answering.”

Tony guess it’s keyed to Thor’s finger prints, or some other biometric, but Thor says the answer is simpler:  “You’re all not worthy.”

Then there’s a ringing sound and they’re all deafened, and Ultron strides into the room, with a crude Avengers logo painted on his slightly misshapen chest. “How could you be worthy? You’re all killers,” Ultron says. “You want to protect the world, but you don’t want to it to change. There’s only one path to peace: your extinction.”

Then a shit ton of robots burst through the wall and attack all of the Avengers, plus Maria Hill.

Then we hear Ultron’s voiceover saying he had a vision of the whole world screaming for mercy, and everybody tangled in it.

And we see glimpses of some city in what looks like Africa being reduced to rubble by an attack. There’s a closeup of Loki’s staff, and everybody looking freaked out on the Quinjet — most of all Bruce Banner, who is holding himself and shaking with a terrified look on his face. People are running everywhere, and the debris is flying like crazy.

Ultron gives a menacing look, as he surveys all the destruction.

Marvel also announced Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be written and directed by James Gunn heres the trailer for the fim set to hit theaters August 1, 2014

I can’t wait to see this film.  I fell in love with the comic and believe that Guardians of the Galaxy may very well be the sleeper hit of this summers blockbusters.

Choose your weapon wisely

My Top 10 list of Weapons from comic books

10. Daredevils staff: The most awesome part of this weapon its a Cane for the blind that also turns into nun chucks, staff, baton and is  equipped with tons of cable to help the hero swing around New York.  And your impressed by Stevie Wonder Hmmpph!

9. Batarang:  Its a boomerang shaped like a bat what more can I say? batslap the shit out of someone from long range.  Reminds me of my mom when I was a kid before I can finish whatever stupid thing was coming out my mouth I got a slipper POW right on the kisser from like 25 ft away quite impressive.

8. Sai’s: I love this weapon handled both by the ever so sexy yet dangerous assassin Elektra and of course my favorite Ninja turtle Raphael he’s cool, rude and knows how to bust some ass with Sai’s.

7. Freeze gun: Mr. Freeze freeze gun has alway’s been a favorite villain weapon of mine.  I grew up loving Iceman and well Victor Fries figured out away to do it without powers.  He’s a total hit with the kids “icecream get your icescream”.

6. Witchblade: Not only can this ancient gauntlet give you increased physical abilities.  It can create weapons, and body armor, heal the wounded, raise the dead ect.  Its pretty freaking bad ass only problem is if you have a penis you cant use it as it only works for the ladies.

5. Captain Americas shield: Easily the most recognizable weapon in all of the comics is  Steve Rogers shield.  Its virtually indestructible and able to absorb most all energy attacks.  It is great for both defense and on the offensive.  And makes for some great backyard decor during a 4th of July BBQ, just picture serving up some burgers and ribs on that platter.

4. Adamantium claws: Wolverines claws are sick who doesn’t want a pair of those at all times, they are indestructible can tear through just about anything or one who stands in your way.  You’d be a tough guy too if you could heal from all your ass beatings and havethese six sharp friends up your sleeves.  Someone tries skipping you when a new cashier opens up in the supermarket (claws out) “I’m next bub” bet you wont get any arguments there.

3. Ironmans armour:  Tony Stark has all the best toys I love Batman to death but if I could I would alway’s have an Iron suit of armor.  I mean out of all the man made weapons I admire this the most cause it totally turns you into the weapon.  Thank you Stark enterprises now if only we could figure out that bathroom situation and it would be ranked higher.

2. mjolnir: Aka Thors Hammer what more can I say about this sexy tool of destruction.  If your worthy enough to yield its power you take it no questions asked, I mean its from the Gods for petes sake.  So what if you talk all funny like a bad Shakespeare play you can crush anyone who so much as dares to chuckle at ye.

1. Power ring: I rank Green lanterns ring as my number one due to the fact it is pretty much the most powerful weapon I’d want to use.  So much fun could be had with my wacky imagination and yes its only as good as the person wearing it but if someone amazing like Bruce Wayne got a hold of a GL ring imagine what that would be.  Oh my I always wished Hal or one of them other Lanterns said “hey Bats you deserve this more then me your so much better with no powers now lets see what you can do with it”.
